DENVER, CO — Michael Bennet today announced his support for the ballot measure created by Senate Bill 26-135 to increase Colorado’s TABOR cap in order to provide more funding for public education in Colorado.
“Colorado’s kids deserve a public education system that equips them to build a middle class life in today’s modern economy. The limitations we put on ourselves decades ago are making it impossible to deliver that level of education,” said Michael. “Today, I’m joining state legislators in asking Colorado voters to give our schools the resources they need to pay teachers what they deserve, offer more time in the classroom, and expand learning opportunities to provide a pathway to good jobs. This measure is an important step, but it is not a magic bullet to fix Colorado’s budget crisis. As Governor, I will build on this effort by leading a statewide effort to take a comprehensive approach to our budget and the needs of our state in order to devise long term, structural solutions to our crisis.”
As a former school superintendent, Michael is running for Governor to transform Colorado’s public education system so kids have the opportunity to build the skills they need to thrive in our state. His education plan calls to pay teachers what they deserve, connect students directly to work, make Colorado a national leader in reading and math growth, and invest in innovation to ensure our public education keeps up with the constantly-changing economy.
Senate Bill 135, which was approved by state lawmakers this week, will place a question on the ballot to allow Colorado voters to increase the state’s annual TABOR cap and requires a portion of that funding to go directly to K-12 education.
