Phil Continues to Duck Questions About Whether He Will Return Donations
DENVER, CO — Colorado gubernatorial candidate Phil Weiser bailed on the final televised gubernatorial debate hosted by CBS Colorado after both candidates agreed to participate on a date initially proposed by the Weiser campaign.
Phil’s sudden change of heart came after he refused to answer CBS Colorado’s questions regarding receiving “about $75,000 from 68 attorneys at 12 law firms the AG’s office was engaged in litigation with or had just settled with.”
Phil’s 2022 campaign acknowledged the conflict of interest and indicated that Weiser “refuses and returns any contributions from anyone tied to a pending investigation.”
It’s now been six days since he refused to answer whether this is still a conflict of interest in this campaign or whether he will pay this money back.
“Phil Weiser pulling out of our final debate is an insult to Colorado voters and a concerning look into how he would govern,” said Nellie Moran, Bennet for Governor campaign manager. “Phil likes to claim that he’s the candidate that shows up, but it’s clear that’s only true when he thinks we won’t be held to account.”
Phil has spent months on the campaign trail talking about his commitment to “showing up everywhere,” but now that he has to face legitimate questions about his conflict of interest campaign contributions from people with ongoing litigation and settlements with his office, he can’t live up to his own standard.
Phil has refused to answer a single question about these concerning fundraising practices. So we’re asking publicly, yet again: will Phil Weiser commit to returning campaign donations he accepted from individuals tied to organizations he was suing?
