After a Year of Attacks, Bennet Says Coloradans Deserve the Full Picture on Weiser’s Record
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Today, at the gubernatorial candidate forum hosted by the Colorado Democratic Party in Colorado Springs, Michael Bennet outlined the choice facing Coloradans in this election. At a time when Donald Trump is attacking Colorado and costs are skyrocketing, Bennet underscored the importance of electing a governor who knows how to deliver new ideas, tough decisions, and real results for Colorado’s future.
“Colorado is facing a cost-of-living crisis from housing to health care to child care that is making it impossible for too many people to get ahead, no matter how hard they work. I know we can turn that around” said Bennet “I’ve spent my career making hard decisions, tough budget choices, and telling the truth even when it’s inconvenient — including to my own party. That is the kind of leadership Colorado needs right now. If I’m elected governor, we will not allow Donald Trump to define our future or our children’s future.”
Throughout the forum, Bennet drew a sharp contrast between his history of strong, trusted leadership and Attorney General Phil Weiser’s track record of political convenience. After a year of attacks from Weiser and his campaign, Bennet made clear that if Weiser wants to make this race about records, Coloradans deserve the full picture.
Here are the facts about Weiser’s record:
-
A “fighter” only when it benefits Phil Weiser. In the first Trump Administration, Phil Weiser signed onto less than a third of the multi-state lawsuits against Trump. Now that he’s running for Governor, that number skyrocketed to 80%. That’s not leadership, that’s self-interest.
-
MIA on making tough calls. Bennet was the first national Democrat to call on Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 election. Weiser stayed silent, only praising Biden for the decision after the fact. No conviction, no hard truths, just following when it’s safe.
-
Refuses to take hard positions. When oil and gas corporations and out-of-state billionaires spent $18 million to undermine Colorado’s gold-standard elections, Phil Weiser stayed silent. Colorado deserves a governor who will take on powerful interests when it counts, not just when it’s politically convenient.
And this record continues even in Weiser’s campaign for Governor. Where Bennet offers solutions to Colorado’s toughest challenges, Weiser offers more studies, safeguarding himself from the political risk of bold, new ideas:
-
Health care: Bennet has a bold plan to finally force insurance companies to lower costs by competing with a real public option for health care. Weiser, unsurprisingly, will start a task force to “study” if it’s possible. No vision, no conviction.
-
Housing: Bennet has a plan to build the housing required to ensure no Coloradan has to spend more than 30% of their income on housing. Weiser thinks getting halfway there is good enough.
