Michael proved himself as the only candidate with the experience and strategy to deliver the housing and transportation outcomes Colorado deserves
DENVER, CO – Today, at the YIMBY gubernatorial candidate forum, Michael Bennet laid out a clear, evidence-driven strategy to tackle Colorado’s affordability crisis by investing in the housing and transit we need with urgency.
“Colorado is facing an affordability crisis that is squeezing Coloradans and putting the American Dream further out of reach of our kids,” said Michael. “We have a moral obligation to the next generation to tackle this challenge head-on. We’re not going to do that by coloring inside the lines or doing more studies. Ensuring that no Coloradan has to pay more than 30% of their income to housing is critical to building an economy and Colorado that works for working people. That’s why I’m running for Governor.”
Michael emphasized that Colorado cannot afford half-measures or business as usual. To meet his goal of ensuring no Coloradan pays more than 30% of their income to rent, Colorado needs statewide solutions for housing affordability. Michael has spent his entire career building diverse coalitions of Coloradans to tackle our toughest problems, and that’s the type of approach the next Governor will need to take to deliver results for working people.
Key takeaways from Michael’s include:
-
A surge in housing supply at the scale Coloradans deserve. Michael laid out his strategy to make it easier, faster, and cheaper to build the housing we need by cutting red tape, putting forward innovative financing models, and prioritizing workforce housing.
-
Housing and transportation are interconnected. Michael focused on the need to think about housing and transportation as interconnected strategies to build for Colorado’s future. He emphasized the need to invest in transit across the state paired with transit-oriented development that strategically increases density and builds walkable, multimodal communities statewide.
-
Housing affordability requires a statewide approach. Michael underscored the importance of addressing housing affordability with a statewide approach, while understanding that “one-size-fits-all” solutions won’t deliver the results we need. As Governor, he will not let communities to sit on the sidelines, and will work closely with local governments and leaders to find solutions that work.
Michael has been traveling across Colorado on this statewide “Our Colorado” tour, meeting with voters from La Plata County to Routt County and everywhere in between to discuss his vision for Colorado and how our state can tackle our toughest challenges.
